Iceland in Winter

This photography workshop will take place on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and in Northern Iceland. We have chosen to limit ourselves to the western and northern part of the country as it offers plenty of coastal scenery and ice formations, which are some of the most dynamic and ever changing subject matters to be encountered in the landscape. We will be in the presence of iconic vistas, which present us with the challenge to see and interpret those well known landscapes in potentially new ways.

 

In the middle of February, daylight hours are beginning to increase quite quickly. Sunrise is at around 9:30 AM and sunset around 6 PM. The evenings will be dedicated to image reviews and lectures. As this workshop is set up to be a landscape photography learning experience we will be limiting our evening excursions to chase Northern Lights.

 

We will be staying for 3 nights at Bu∂ir in Snæfellsnes and another 3 nights at Lake Myvatn in the north. Travel between these two bases will be broken up by overnighting at different locations at the north coast.

 

My co-instructor, Daniel Bergmann, is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished Icelandic landscape photographers (the beautiful image at the head of this page is one of his).  He has been guiding photographers in Iceland for two decades and his knowledge of the island is unparalleled. Daniel and I have worked together on many previous Iceland workshops, the first one in 2012.

 

This workshop is not about locations but about developing your vision. Daniel and I will actively encourage all participants to strive for a personal approach. We'll be working together in the field making images, reviewing the day’s work in the evenings, listening to inspiring talks and having fun doing what brings us all together – our passion for landscape photography.
